Appearance: Contrary to popular belief, Matt actually is an auburn brunette, as revealed in Death Note 13: How to Read. His eyes are dark blue, though they're concealed most of the time with his goggles. He's often seen wearing a red and black striped shirt, denim jeans, boots, gloves, and smoking a cigarette. He stands a few centimeters shorter than Mello.

Personality: Not much is revealed about him, but based on his few lines, he can be identified as quirky, sarcastic, laidback, and overall lazy.
History: Mail was a five-year-old child living with an abusive father in the streets of Japan, fifteen years ago. He was a self-taught genius, already skilled with hacking. He stole to get by, occasionally stealing for his father. Mail lived this kind of life until a little before his sixth birthday, when he was caught hacking an ATM machine. Police officers kept the child with them until his father was found. Mr. Jeevas was arrested for multiple crimes, including child abuse and a recent murder at a bar a few nights ago. Social services offered to take Mail, but a man by the name of Watari stepped up, claiming that he had been sent by L to get Mail. That was when Mail was transferred to Wammy's, an orphanage for gifted children. There, he earned his alias, 'Matt.' He was quiet, and often stayed in his room, though that didn't stop the day he and Mello met. He stayed by the blond's side through the next few years, until Mello left to avenge L.
Matt left the orphanage as soon as he was able to, also. After all, life was dull again, ever since Mello left. So the redhead got an apartment with the trust fund he had from Wammy's. He also got a job in hacking and earned his living by stealing for big companies. This was exactly the job that caused his reunion with Mello, who at that time had the Death Note, and had no idea the hacker he had hired was Matt.
However, the two worked well together, Matt becoming Mello's spy. He tailed a girl named Misa Amane in order to gain information about Kira for some time. He did tasks like this for Mello, who he stayed with for the upcoming year. He had been the one who planted the bombs in the hideout that caused Mello's scar.
Then, Mello tells him about his plan of kidnapping Takada, and with confidence said that it would finally unveil who Kira was. Matt didn't understand why; the blond said himself that he could die, and that Near would probably get all the credit. Still, he did as he was told, following through with the plan. He distracted Takada's guards as Mello kidnapped her. He ends up in a car chase, and eventually gets cornered by the bodyguards. He steps out of his car, claiming that they probably had a lot of questions to ask him, and that they wouldn't shoot. However, he was wrong, and he was shot to death.
